Beavers Are Likely to Rebuild

Founder of Worth a Dam says things need to calm down first, asks community to keep watching.

"They'll most likely rebuild here when things calm down," said Heidi Perryman, PhD, founder of Worth a Dam, of the Martinez beavers. The aquatic creatures lost four dams and their lodge on Thursday after heavy rainstorms swelled Alhambra Creek to nearly overflowing.

Perryman, who has been one of the most vocal and active supporters of beavers in Alhambra Creek, said Friday that the community can do some things now to help the creatures.

"Watch, wait, be patient, and don’t mess with the creek," she said in an email to Martinez Patch. "If the beavers rebuild, it might not be in the same area of the creek, but we won’t know until it happens. We know they have other holes to hang out in."

She noted that there were fresh beaver prints in the silt on the creek bank, indicating that the beavers are alive and well and still in the area.

They could use some saplings to help them in their rebuilding efforts, Perryman said, but she added that "it would take a magic fairy to get the city to approve that."
