An Argument Against Arguing

Also, Sandalow is here, vendors are needed for July street sale, volunteers wanted for Beaver Fest in August, and a senior shout-out.

Today is MONDAY, June 6, 2011. Rain is forecast for today, then the word is that something like sunshine will begin to reappear. You can choose to believe it or not. There are interesting points of view about things like weather — even that has become an issue of political debate today. It seems as though we have become addicted to argument, as though the answer to our troubles lies in proving other people wrong. No doubt this has been a universal syndrome of humanity since there was a humanity, but it feels as though the argument level has ramped up over the past decade or so. There seem to be fewer and fewer people willing to listen, and more ready to speak their very certain minds about what should and should not be taking place in their city, state, and/or planet. Perhaps that is just the result of having the Internet host a place where all of us can share our thoughts to a large audience. But whatever is going on here, it seems to me that a little kindness toward other points of view, coupled with just some downright kindness, would be a recipe for a tastier outcome for everyone. That, and a few days of back-to-back sunshine.

  1. In case you forgot, former Martinez News Gazette reporter will speak tonight at the Shell Clubhouse, as part of the Main Street Martinez Speakers' Series. Marc will share his vast knowledge of Washington politics, which he has been covering for many years, and also recount some stories of his time (from 1984-86) as a News Gazette reporter, when he covered the Board of Supervisors and general assignment stories. Don't miss this event.
  2. If you were planning to attend this week's Design Review Committee meeting on Wednesday, forget about it. It's been cancelled.
  3. Keep your eye out later today for a shout-out for vendors to sign up for the Another's Treasure Community Street Sale, scheduled this year for July 17. It's a fundraiser for the Martinez Soroptimists. If you want to be part of this Downtown Retail Focus Group event, call Char at 228-1100, Anne at 229-1900 or Carolyn at 202-3747.
  4. If you're interested in helping out the beavers, Worth A Dam is seeking volunteers for the annual Beaver Festival on August 6. If you would like to help, you can contact Heidi through the Worth A Dam website.
  5. Finally, just a great big shout-out to all the seniors in town who find themselves graduating from high school. We need your energy, passion and intelligence more than ever, and we're thrilled that you're about to share it with us. Congratulations!
