30 Nights with the Martinez / Pacheco Homeless Outreach - Readying for Rain

A slow, rainy night in Martinez.

Day 16

5:30 p.m.: On Fridays through out the summer I will be in the downtown area -- there seems to be a good turnout of the homeless at the car shows, so where the homeless are, I am. But there wasn't much of a car show tonight, so I just walked around and made some contacts. I made sure the homeless were prepared for the weather. I concentrated on blakets and plastic to keep their things dry.

Then I get a call from the VA hospital -- they had a guy stranded and he needed some services so I headed over. I meet the guy, we get to talking; he was in the navy and he needed somewhere to go and food to eat so I take care of the food. But the shelter part was a little harder; I couldn't get him tonight but tomorrow is another day, but I was able to call 211 and get out to Berkeley where they did have a bed for him, even though he wanted to stay in this county. It was all I could offer so he took it and we were off to BART.

Now it's raining and I'm checking a few of the vacant houses only to find one person. He was ok and didn't want anything. Then I got a call to go to Concord for a few people that needed blankets. I thought it would be busier in Martinez tonight but really it was just dead.
