Free Christmas Tree

Making your own stuff is fun, and the supplies are free all around you!

First, A Merry Christmas to everyone in Patchland. And a Happy New Year!

While going through some old photos and ideas for Christmas I found a few things I had forgotten about. One was making a free Christmas tree with a glue gun, a stick and some evergreen cuttings. A couple of the others were of my old house decorated with lights, old family photos that always make me emotional this time of year, and some Christmas party photos with me in them. OK, let's move on.

So to the free Christmas tree! I wanted a tree but didn't want to spend so much. I haven't checked in a while, but I bet Christmas tree's are not cheap by now. I think they were  $80 for a little tree when I last checked. Little to me is 8 feet, so I love Christmas tree's!

So a few years ago I thought about it, and I know it has most likely been done. But I was trimming this evergreen tree from a neighbors sidewalk, and had these nice clippings. The tree is a Douglas fir our neighbor put in after Christmas years ago and is big now, so it was a Christmas tree. Then I thought, if I just got a long stick and grabbed my glue gun, (yes I love glue guns), I could make a tree, then decorate it and have a tree for free! So I did it.

I simply set the stick on the ground next to my cuttings, and with my garden sheers I began. I did end up nailing each branch to the stick with small nails as I went, then glued it all together. It was a 2 dimensional tree, which is great for a window, like you can see in the photo. Just shape it as you go, from the bottom wide, to a Christmas tree tip, and shape it as you want it. You can draw an outline on the ground with chalk if you want. Fill in empty spots with little clippings and after a while, you have a tree! It was fun.

So good luck on your tree if you decide to try one. If you have trouble finding clippings of an evergreen tree, you can also use your imagination and look around for some other snipping's. You can possibly call a tree service and they might have some snipping's for you! I get 40 yards a year of free good wood chips from a great local tree service, which I use all over the property. I love free stuff!

If you decide to try it and have any questions, please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer! I should say in the photo I had not yet decorated the tree. Now that is the fun part, and doing that you can really go to town, and use your imagination on using free stuff!
