Two New Waterfront Complexes May Soon Put Martinez On The Sports Map

Two former storage warehouses have been transformed into massive indoor sports arenas. Let the games begin.

There is about to be a sports explosion in the city of Martinez, as two new indoor sports complexes prepare to welcome athletes and champions of all ages to the city.

Universal Sports Academy (USA) is in the final stages of construction and anticipate opening their doors sometime in April, said Tommy Sparacino, one of USA’s partners. The facility, which is located in one of the old Waters Storage warehouses at the end of Ferry Street near Waterfront Park, will host multiple sports, including indoor baseball, softball, soccer, football and general conditioning.

There will be batting cages, weights, a study room, and fields of artificial turf for the actual games. The facility is will offer teams and individuals a place to play in all weather.

“We’re really excited about this,” Sparacino said Monday. “I grew up in Martinez, and I can’t wait to start giving back to this community. I hope people find us and really get a lot of enjoyment out of our place.”

The other warehouse on the property, which is operated by Norcal Sports, focuses on basketball and volleyball. That complex has already opened for tournaments and games, though work is still in progress on a part of the building.
