The Mike Is Open Every Thursday At Roxx On Main

The weekly event is a major part of the burgeoning downtown nightlife scene.

It started modestly enough two years ago--Roxanne Cole thought it would be fun to offer some local musicians a chance to play in her window space at Roxx on Main on a Thursday night, which tended to be on the slow side.

Now, it's difficult to find a seat at the weekly event. Musicians from Martinez and around the Bay Area seek out the open mike to share their songs, their talents and their enthusiasm for an environment that feels more like a living room than a formal venue.

One recent night featured Harrison Flynn, celebrating his 18th birthday and playing a number he wrote on his brand new guitar. The evening also featured Danny White and Hope Savage, two members of the Hopeful Romantics, a local favorite Americana group, and a set from Chris Bryant, the leader of Garageland Rodeo and the musical organizer of the open mike.

There is no cover charge, but Roxx provides a great selection of small plate dishes, wine, beer and coffee during the performance. It's a great place to check out local talent, as well as performers from nearby towns like Benicia and Concord. And there is always one featured performer who gets to play a half hour spotlight set.

The list is open to one and all, so bring your instrument out of the closet, dust it off and head down to Roxx on Main on Thursday, starting at 7 p.m.

I have found it's very hard to find a parking spot there. Another negative is the number of theRead More "constant outsdoorsmen" types lurking all around. I've been confronted several times and worried about leaving my car there.

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

Do City Council members still get free parking passes as perk?

The main reason I don't go to any of the businesses downtown is the lack of parking. What littleRead More there is is taken up by the owners of these establishments. God forbid they park somewhere else less convenient so actual paying customers can frequent their businesses.
