Don't Want a Smart Meter? Tell PG&E By Tuesday

The controversial program continues to generate angst among homeowners. The deadline to opt out is May 1.

PG&E wants to hear from you.

If you don't want the SmartMeter they installed on the side of your house — and they've installed a lot of them — the company wants to hear from you before Tuesday.

According to their website, May 1 is the company's deadline to opt out of the SmartMeter program.

The SmartMeters have generated currents of controversy ever since PG&E began installing them without notifying residents. Homeowners have raised issues of radiation emissions and privacy. The Center for Electrosmog Prevention claims that SmartMeters cost more, pose a health and safety threat and infringe on privacy rights.

Leaving the SmartMeter program, and telling PG&E you want to have the older analog meter re-installed at your home, will cost you. A ruling by the California Public Utilities Commission three months ago allows PG&E to charge you $75 for the change, and charge you an additional $10 per month on top of your normal energy charges.

For their part, PG&E consider the SmartMeters to be an essential upgrade to their customer service, making their distribution system more reliable. The meters record homeowner energy use in great detail; once an account is set up on the PG&E website, an electric customer can get close to a real-time estimate of energy begin used at their home.

A groundswell of opposition has emerged from PG&E's handling of the program. A website called Fight the Fees! has been created by a Watsonville woman, with many customers complaining and enclosing photos expressing their opposition to the announced fee charges. The essential question being asked: "Why should we pay to discontinue a service we never wanted in the first place?"

What do you think? Are you comfortable with a SmartMeter? Do you think PG&E should be able to charge you for what may have been an unwanted upgrade? Let us know in the comments below.

I have found it's very hard to find a parking spot there. Another negative is the number of theRead More "constant outsdoorsmen" types lurking all around. I've been confronted several times and worried about leaving my car there.

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

The main reason I don't go to any of the businesses downtown is the lack of parking. What littleRead More there is is taken up by the owners of these establishments. God forbid they park somewhere else less convenient so actual paying customers can frequent their businesses.

Jim, then that's yet another penalty for showing up for jury duty. The system needs a big overhaul.Read More
