Are You Ready For The Workout?

There are a lot of great options for exercise in Martinez.

Sure, exercise seems important as summer approaches and a lot of people want to look good in a bathing suit. But the onset of fall is a great time to think about starting or increasing your exercise routine. With the fall comes the start of the indulgence season - Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the December holidays all mean an abundance of food and drink. Couple that with a lack of exercise, and you are facing a problem come January.

Martinez has a wealth of workout options. First, just walk. There are many trails and streets that ooze charm and history in this fine town, and it's worth walking around just to get a look. Go hiking in the hills, on Mt. Wanda, or on Carquinez Scenic Drive. Try a jaunt around Waterfront Park, or Hidden Lakes.

But perhaps you want something a little more organized. Maybe you need a person to show you what to do, to give you a little motivation.

In that case, consider the Bootcamp at California Fitness 24/7. For $10, you get a serious workout.

For those 50 and over, Diablo Valley College is offering Fall Fitness After 50 classes that include a personal trainer, dietician, weight training, and more.

And you can always join the Walking Club, which will meet tomorrow at 9 a.m. at 1798 Center Ave. and walk about two miles. There is another group that meets downtown on Wednesdays at the Senior Center on Green St.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it's something you will ultimately enjoy. Exercise only works if you do it, and why would you do it if it wasn't fun? So pick activities that make your heart beat with excitement before you put that ticker through its paces.

Hi Robert, Thanks for dropping in and checking out the blog. The new Patch look is so 'new' as I amRead More still learning to navigate through. Just updated it and added the link to my film review. Thanks again. Cheers!

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

As long as there are meters downtown, let's make it as easy as possible to pay. I hate having toRead More dig around for change to feed a meter. Using a card is much more convenient.

There should be NO parking meters.

George, I think the meters are there to keep jurors from tying up all the parking not for revenue.Read More Martinez needs a parking garage for jurors but it might be difficult to pass a bond for one. Thing is, the last time I got a jury summons for Martinez it said I could just put the summons notice on the dashboard and park at a meter without putting money in it and no ticket would be issued. Unfortunately the court house is probably both a boon and a bane for growth downtown.
