Martinez Seeks New Leader For Theater

City leaders are looking for someone to take over management duties at the Campbell Theater.

The stage is being set for a new leader to take the reins at the Campbell Theater.

The Willows Theater Group operated the theater until 2012, when the group filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The City of Martinez is now searching for a successor to take over management and promotions duties for the theater. The deadline for proposals is August 19.

"Over the course of the past several months, we have been contacted by a number of interested parties (some local, some from elsewhere in the Bay Area). We’ll be looking for the best proposal and are hopeful we get lots of good responses," according to Michael Chandler of the City of Martinez.

The City hasn't received any official proposals yet, but Chandler expects to see some action as the deadline draws closer.

The City's ad reads: "The City is seeking a qualified and experienced Promoter to manage, operate and staff the Theater; market, promote, book and schedule a variety of uses in the Theater; and coordinate with the City to afford community-based non-profits, the local school district, and the City with opportunities to also utilize the Theater."

The theater was open Monday afternoon for a site tour. The cozy, cabaret-style, 160-seat Campbell Theater includes a bar/concessions area, upgraded restrooms and a second-floor area with waiting and changing areas, according to the City's description.

The City of Martinez first leased the Ward Street theater building from the Bisio Trust in January 2005. After a number of upgrades, the City leased the theater to the Willows Theater Group in 2007.

The Willows' bankruptcy left the City with a building, stage and seats, and some equipment, but no back rent or future income from the theater company. The City is eager to regain that revenue source and would charge a flat rate to the new manager based on bookings, with exceptions made for local non-profits, City events and school functions.
