Video: Valentine's Day Wedding

More than 30 couples officially tied the knot at the Contra Costa County Clerk's offices on Thursday. Here's one of them.

Jamila Henderson and Kenny Chowdhary are having a big church wedding on Oct. 13.

But on Thursday, they were at the Contra Costa County Clerk's offices in downtown Martinez making their matrimony official.

Henderson, 29, and Chowdhardy, 30, said they simply wanted their official wedding anniversary to be Valentine's Day. The ceremony in October is more of a celebration.

Henderson, a Dublin resident, grew up in Minnesota. Chowdhary, a Richmond resident, grew up in New Jersey. They met while working together in Princeton.

Their Valentine ceremony was performed by Michael Mahoney, a retired plumber from Richmond who legally can officiate weddings in California. He volunteers on Valentine's Day to oversee the ceremonies.

"I love doing this. It's so much fun," said Mahoney.

This was one of more than 30 weddings performed Thursday in two rooms at the clerk's office.

Barbara Chambers, a retired assistant county clerk, also volunteered to perform some of the ceremonies.

Ceremonies were also being conducted Thursday at the Alameda County Clerk's office in Oakland.

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

As long as there are meters downtown, let's make it as easy as possible to pay. I hate having toRead More dig around for change to feed a meter. Using a card is much more convenient.

There should be NO parking meters.

George, I think the meters are there to keep jurors from tying up all the parking not for revenue.Read More Martinez needs a parking garage for jurors but it might be difficult to pass a bond for one. Thing is, the last time I got a jury summons for Martinez it said I could just put the summons notice on the dashboard and park at a meter without putting money in it and no ticket would be issued. Unfortunately the court house is probably both a boon and a bane for growth downtown.
