These Girls Are Passionate About Giving Clothes Away

Paige and Katy Easterly have started What's Mine Is Yours, which collects gently used clothing and gives it to girls in need in the community.

How to two teenage girls decide to spend their spare time giving clothes away instead of shopping for them?

Paige and Katy Easterly decided over the summer that their closets were full of clothes they weren’t wearing any more. The clothes were perfectly good and it occurred to them that there were girls out there it the community who could use some nice clothes.

And so What’s Mine Is Yours was born. Now Paige, 15, and Katy, 14, are running their organization with the help of some friends, adults and other generous teens.

“Our goal is collecting clothes in our community and redistributing them to girls who need them in our community,” Paige said.

They take clothes for girls between the ages of 12 and 17.

“We chose that age group because we can relate to them,” Paige said. “And they receive the least amount of attention at that age. When people adopt a family, they tend to focus on babies. We wanted to change that.”

“Normally, we get the word out to our friends on Facebook and Twitter, and our website. Then we asked 100 people we knew to donate clothing, and they would leave a bag of clothes on their porch.”

So far, the girls have collected over 800 pieces. They also work with Students Rise Above, which helps give students the confidence to get a job or go to school. They want to establish a relationship with local charities so they can keep track of where the clothes go.

“We just want to give back,” said Katy. “Our parents and friends give us so much support and help us keep going.”
