Sights From Beaver Festival 2013

Fun, furry day at Martinez Beaver Festival

"Beaver Park" was jam-packed Saturday with kilted fiddlers, costumed beaver fans and environmentalists all clamoring for attention to their cause during the 2013 Martinez Beaver Festival.

The park was lined with tents from Guadalupe Conservancy, the Marine Mammal Center and, of course, Worth a Dam, an organization with a close connection to the resident Martinez beavers.

Heidi Perryman, festival organizer and founder of the group Worth a Dam, said the city's positive relationship with the beavers is a good example for other cities.

"The city engineered pipes to make sure the river doesn't flood and the beaver dams aren't damaged," she said.

Students from Whitman College patrolled the festival Saturday to capture footage for their project, a short documentary to be titled "Beaver Believers." The students have reportedly visited beaver sites in Colorado, California and other states.
