Morello Park

A Park for Every Day of the Week

Morello Park is a big park and offers places to play tennis, basketball, and baseball – something to keep you busy every day of the week. This 5 acre park seems much bigger, with Morello Park School separating the two fields. The front of the park runs parallel to Morello Park Drive and consists of a long and wide grassy area surrounded by a smooth paved walkway. The walkway is perfect for kids to ride their bikes, people to walk their dogs, or anytime you just want to stroll along and enjoy the day. On a recent weekday afternoon a lot of people were enjoying the park: people walking their dogs, kids playing, a man and his son playing tennis, a girl doing cartwheels, and kids walking home from school.

In the middle of the grassy area are both the tennis court and the basketball court. The tennis court is surrounded by a tall chain-link fence, so if you play there you don’t have to run too far for your missed shots. Along the path before the tennis court there’s a charming white painted bathroom, with a bike rack next to it. In front of the tennis court, set in concrete and stone is a plaque dedicating the park to Howard Ray, 1922-1997. It says he was “A devoted public servant and compassionate friend who exemplified true community spirit.”

Nearby is a comfortable set of picnic tables with a barbeque, which provides a welcoming spot to meet friends or get together with family. It would also a good place to bring a bag lunch and get away from the office during the week. There’s a real sense of community in this park. Maybe because of the row houses that line one side of the park, the school in the middle, and the beautiful hills in the back. Or maybe it is the location, the easy access, and all the 5 acres of space with so much to offer. Continue on the path past Morello Park School to find the back of the park that features a baseball field.

Before you reach the ball field, to the right is a city run day care facility. Check the Martinez Parks site for more information. The play area associated with the facility is available for all children to use during non-business hours. To the left is a concession stand that serves the baseball games. Another group of picnic tables provide a spot to enjoy all the delicious foods you can purchase at the stand. Next to the tables is the baseball field, Joey Garcia Field #2. The baseball field is very large, and long, just like the front of the park. Alongside the field to the right is another row of picnic tables, and below it, a small creek. Above that is open space. Morello Park has so much to offer and there’s something for everyone.  It’s a great place to stop by and enjoy every day of the week.

Morello Park is located on Morello Avenue and Morello Park Drive. Do you spend time at Morello Park?
