John Muir Park

The wholeness of nature.

John Muir Park is a small park with a dirt pathway that follows the shape of a circle. A circle represents wholeness, and here in Martinez, our native son, John Muir represents the wholeness of nature that he helped to preserve.

This park offers open space with grass, mature trees, a pathway, and five picnic tables. There are three wooden picnic tables in the front when you walk up to the park. The pathway that circles the park encloses a grassy area, but even on this late-winter day, it was rough in patches. Continue on the path toward the fence that surrounds the school, and you’ll find two more wooden picnic tables and a water fountain. Several eucalyptus trees behind these tables are huge. Rooted in this place, they have watched the city of Martinez grow alongside them.

Past these tables you can follow the path down to reach a paved pathway that leads to Holly View Drive. Walking along this pathway the trees and sloping hillside hide all the homes and the school, making it feel like you are completely surrounded by nature. Below is a small creek where trees and bushes are fed by the water. Above the path are patches of green grass, and on this day, a carpet of bright yellow flowers. Walking around this park is easy, and for its small size it offers a variety of natural beauty, including some redwood trees. The beauty here has flourished because it was preserved in a park for all of us to enjoy. And preservation of nature was John Muir's passion.
