Hundreds Turn Out For Martinez Fourth of July Parade - Thousands for Fireworks

A great day, a glimmering evening, and a massive traffic jam marks another Fourth of July in Martinez.

The day began with the raising of the flag at the Veteran's Memorial Hall, then it was on to pancakes, eggs and sausage at Roxx on Main, as staff and volunteers scrambled eggs and skills to serve the hungry masses. Shortly after, hundreds of men, women and children lined Main Street from Court Street to Alhambra Avenue, and the annual 4th of July Parade was on.

It began and ended with a Martinez police escort. In between, veterans and dancers and martial arts practioners paraded their talents, along with a unicyclist, an Abraham Lincoln impersonator, a bookworm and a host of other participants, all of whom were greeted by an enthusiastic and very appreciative crowd.

Then, as the day turned toward late afternoon, Martinez once again became the place to be as hundreds of cars competed for parking, and folks from throughout the county found their favorite viewing spot. Then, at 9:30 p.m., the first bright blaze of pyrotechnic poetry shattered the sky, to the delight of everyone. For the next 30 minutes, the sky was the pallete for a salute to our nation, painted in light and sound. And this year, the finale was truly a sight to behold, taking the collective breath away.

Finally, it was over, and the annual traffic nightmare on Berrellesa Street and Escobar began, as those yearly visitors once again were reminded that there is really only two ways out of town.

I have found it's very hard to find a parking spot there. Another negative is the number of theRead More "constant outsdoorsmen" types lurking all around. I've been confronted several times and worried about leaving my car there.

The Fire Crew worked very late into the night and into the next morning. The Police were alsoRead More working nearby, picking up some of the dead baby animals that were hit on the road, displaced by the fire.

Hi Robert, Thanks for dropping in and checking out the blog. The new Patch look is so 'new' as I amRead More still learning to navigate through. Just updated it and added the link to my film review. Thanks again. Cheers!

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

Do City Council members still get free parking passes as perk?

The main reason I don't go to any of the businesses downtown is the lack of parking. What littleRead More there is is taken up by the owners of these establishments. God forbid they park somewhere else less convenient so actual paying customers can frequent their businesses.

Jim, then that's yet another penalty for showing up for jury duty. The system needs a big overhaul.Read More
