Anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer or battled through treatment will know the struggle, hardship and dispair caused by the disease. But hope is a powerful force, and that's what pushes the Relay for Life participants to walk together for 24 hours.
The 2013 event organized by the American Cancer Society takes place in Martinez from 10am on July 27 until 10am on July 28, 2013 at Martinez Jr. High School. Team registration is open now and almost $2,000 has already been raised.
Participants camp out at the event and team members take turn doing laps on the track — either running or walking. Cancer survivors lead the event with the first lap, celebrating victory over cancer while being cheered on from the sidelines.
A ceremony is held in the evening to remember those lost to cancer. Candles light up the track in memoriam as the relay continues through the night.
