Christmas Fishing: Trout Being Released Into East Bay Lakes

People who like to fish are getting a holiday present from state officials. Do you plan to go fishing? Share your photos!

Here's a new tradition for East Bay families. Christmas fishing.

The state Department of Fish and Game this month is releasing thousands of trout into more than a dozen Bay Area lakes to the delight of local anglers.

The department announced it would release more than 30,000 pounds of rainbow trout in Bay Area lakes during the month of December. Some of the fish weigh as much as two pounds.

"We want to create opportunities for families to spend quality time together through the time-honored tradition of fishing," said DFG acting regional manager Scott Wilson. "Fishing, like many other outdoor pursuits, helps keep people connected to their natural environment."

In Contra Costa County, the Lafayette Reservoir, Heather Farm Pond in Walnut Creek, Hidden Valley Pond in Martinez and Contra Loma Reservoir in Antioch are receiving trout.

In Alameda County, Horseshoe Lake in the Oakland Hills, Lakeshore Pond in Newark, Shadow Cliff Lake in Pleasanton, Temescal Lake in Oakland and Lake Elizabeth in Fremont are receiving trout.

A complete list of Bay Area lakes to receive trout stock can be found online at

In the Fish & Game's actual fish planting schedule, for Contra Costa County, only Lafeyette Res. and Hidden Valley can be found. Heather Farm and Control Loma are not on there. Not sure why.
