THE KIDS ON THE BLOCK SING “SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER!”

The Kids on the Block, an educational puppet show, is one of Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s  eight philanthropic programs.  This internationally acclaimed program originated in 1977, in direct response to the Mainstream Law, which required that children with disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment.  In its 36 year history, The Kids on the Block have addressed 40 different well-researched, thoroughly field-tested, and expertly written programs addressing such issues as physical challenges, learning differences, and social concerns.

Since 1985, dedicated member volunteers of Assistance League of Diablo Valley have practiced detailed instruction in the Japanese form of puppetry, called Bunraku, and with the use of black apparel, have blended into the backdrop in order to bring these elementary school headliners to life.  This year alone, nearly 4700 schoolchildren in the Contra Costa community have watched Mark deal with his physical challenges, have gained a better understanding of Jennifer’s learning differences when she explained her need to attend resource class, or have nodded in agreement when Brenda shared that her parents’ divorce was a grown-up problem.  Music has enhanced the themes with such songs as “Drop and Roll” to help teach fire prevention, and the all-time favorite, “Kids are Different,” celebrating the fact that they… “don’t even look the same.  Some kids speak different languages, …all have a different name.”

Delivered with a balance of humor and compassion, these enjoyable presentations do not discount the serious messages that the Kids on the Block have imparted.   In more recent years, Eddie has warned elementary school children to avoid being bullied by always having a friend with them.  Another area of concern, “Stop Bullying: Speak Up!” has effectively confronted the joint sentiment of Time Warner, Inc. and Facebook in stopping cyber bullying in its tracks.

The Kids on the Block braved a demanding schedule this year, performing as often as 56 times a year. True to form, they’ve concluded each program with a Q & A.  As in previous years, children in the audience found the Kids quite approachable and, therefore, shared things that bother or confuse them with the puppets.   By the time the curtain came down, all involved had forged a better sense of self-awareness.

While “School’s Out For The Summer,” The Kids on the Block intend to devote much of their time to reviewing their scripts and rehearsing their musical selections in preparation for the 2013-2014 school year, when they will perform in as many as 35 elementary schools in the Contra Costa community.  At this writing, Mark and Renaldo are attending summer camp, where they are learning that empowering activities can eclipse their physical challenges.

The Kids on the Block’s success could not be realized without the generosity of community and corporate support.  To learn more about Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s other philanthropic programs and its fundraising components, visit its website: diablovalley.assistanceleague.org.
