A Deli-licious Launch Just In Time For Lunch

The 500 block of Main Street gets yet another eatery as Luigi's 99 Cent Store adds an authentic deli to its offerings.

Luigi Daberdaku has had a dream for the past six years, and last week that dream came true. He served his first sandwich to a grateful customer and thus launched the latest lunch option in downtown Martinez. And it's receiving rave reviews.

The deli, located in the rear of is a humble enough affair - beneath its glass counters is displayed a variety of gourmet cheeses, meats and homemade salads. Add those ingredients between two slices of artisan bread by Semifreddi's Bakery and you have yourself an honest-to-goodness deli sandwich right here in River City.

Enjoy it to go, or sit at one of the tables. It's far enough away from the store traffic to feel as though you're in a separate establishment.

"I had the new police chief in here, and the mayor," Daberdaku said. "They were very impressed."

Another impressed official trying out the newest dining spot on Monday was Contra Costa County Clerk/Recorder Steve Weir. He sent Martinez Patch a review shortly after he finished his sandwich.

"I think Martinez is blessed with many great places to eat and the new Luigi's Deli is a good addition," Weir wrote. "Food is fresh (including bread), and the helping is generous (the sandwich is ample for two). They did not have whole wheat, and I have asked for that option."

"We're thrilled to be here," said Liz Sandoval, who was helping out behind the counter on Monday. "We look forward to people finding out about us and joining us for lunch."
